PROJECT OVERVIEW
The Nifty Fifty Alabama Travel Guide is an editorial design project focused on transforming traditional tourism publications into immersive, personality driven experiences. Centered on Alabama, a place I had previously visited, the guide blends personal perspective, research, and expressive visual design to create a publication that feels welcoming, energetic, and memorable.
THE CHALLENGE
Many travel guides prioritize clarity and information but often lack visual personality or emotional connection. The goal was to design a guide that maintains usability while increasing visual excitement, reflects a playful and engaging tone, and creates a system that could scale across multiple destinations.
THE CONCEPT
Inspired by my own experiences traveling to Alabama, the guide was designed to feel like a scrapbook of memories in progress. While base copy was provided, I expanded the content through additional research to create a more immersive and complete narrative.
The concept presents travel as something personal and experiential, capturing the spontaneity, charm, and warmth of exploring a new place. Rather than simply listing destinations, the guide invites readers to imagine the moments they could create there.

EDITORIAL IDENTITY
The visual identity was designed to feel playful, nostalgic, and expressive while maintaining clarity and structure. A scrapbook inspired layout system incorporates polaroid style imagery, sticker like graphic elements, and layered compositions that mimic collected travel memories.
Expressive typography and bright, summery colors reinforce the guide’s lighthearted tone. This approach contrasts traditional travel guides by prioritizing personality alongside information, creating a system that feels curated rather than corporate.
EDITORIAL EXPERIENCE
The guide was expanded to nearly double its original content, resulting in a more realistic and fully developed publication. Each section blends storytelling with usability, allowing readers to navigate destinations while feeling inspired to explore.
Visual pacing, imagery, and layout create rhythm throughout the guide, encouraging continued engagement. The result is a publication that functions both as a resource and as an experience.
SERIES DEVELOPMENT
To demonstrate scalability, additional covers were designed for Alabama, Idaho, and Vermont, all unified under the same visual system.
This extension shows how the concept could evolve into a cohesive Nifty Fifty travel guide series, adaptable to multiple locations while maintaining a recognizable identity.

BEHIND THE SCENES
Process played a key role in shaping the final guide. Early exploration included layout sketches, typography studies, and visual direction testing to define the tone of the publication.
Spreads were refined through multiple iterations, experimenting with composition, pacing, and hierarchy to balance storytelling with readability. Additional research informed both content expansion and visual decisions, ensuring the guide felt both authentic and engaging.
