Reimagining Stories
Editorial cover redesigns exploring narrative, emotion, and typographic storytelling
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Reimagining Stories is an editorial design project focused on redesigning covers for three of 2023’s best selling nonfiction books. The project explores how typography, visual symbolism, and narrative interpretation can transform book covers into emotional entry points for readers.
Rather than focusing solely on aesthetics, the redesigns investigate how editorial design can communicate story, tone, and meaning before a reader ever opens the book.
THE CHALLENGE
Book covers must capture attention instantly while representing complex and deeply human narratives. The goal was to translate nuanced stories into compelling visual systems while balancing conceptual depth with commercial appeal.
THE CONCEPT
Each selected title explores a different dimension of the human experience, including life, nature, and obsession. The redesign approach treated each book as its own narrative world, allowing typography and composition to reflect the emotional core of each story.
The concept centers on using design as storytelling, where visual decisions mirror the themes, tone, and emotional depth of the content.

EDITORIAL DESIGN APPROACH
Typography served as the primary storytelling tool across all three covers. Rather than relying heavily on imagery, the designs explore how type can carry emotional meaning through form, spacing, and composition.
Each design balances clarity with expression, using scale, hierarchy, and manipulation to reflect the tone of the narrative. This approach reinforces how typography can function as both information and storytelling.
INDIVIDUAL COVER CONCEPTS
The In Between
A soft sky gradient paired with delicate, flowing typography evokes transition, stillness, and reflection. Ornamental linework inspired by the gates to heaven symbolizes passage and connection, reinforcing themes of peace, empathy, and the space between life and what lies beyond.
Braiding Sweetgrass
Fluid watercolor textures and organic typography reflect the interconnectedness between humans and the natural world. Movement within the composition mirrors growth and natural rhythms, reinforcing themes of balance, reciprocity, and ecological harmony.
The Art Thief
Ornate gold frames and theatrical curtain elements introduce a sense of illusion and control. The fragmented title mirrors the act of theft, creating visual tension and reinforcing themes of obsession, secrecy, and the allure of art.
DESIGN IMPACT
Reimagining Stories demonstrates how editorial design can bridge storytelling and visual communication. By translating narrative themes into typographic experiences, the project highlights how design shapes perception before the first page is read.
BEHIND THE SCENES
Through narrative analysis, experimentation, and iterative design, the project evolved into a cohesive series that balances conceptual thinking with readability.
The final outcome reflects the belief that strong editorial design does not simply decorate a story, it invites audiences into it.
